All 17 of the added rigs were oil-directed, bringing the count to 105 rigs for the week. The number of rigs targeting gas in Canada were unchanged at 39 units.

The US drilling rig count dropped 5 units to 855 rigs working during the week, Baker Hughes reported.

All five of those units were land-based, bringing that total to 830. Rigs drilling in inland waters were unchanged at 1. Rigs drilling offshore also were unchanged from last week at 24.

There was a 3-unit decline in oil rigs to 710 and a 2-unit loss in gas rigs to 144.

Horizontal drilling rigs were down 3 units to 749. Directional drilling rigs also declined 3 units to reach 54.
